As soon as he turned his truck up the driveway John noticed
that the lights on the second floor of the house were out. “I could have sworn
I left those on,” he thought to himself, “Maybe not, it’s been a long day. No I
was sure I’d left the lights on throughout the house.” The feeling of dread
began to creep over him once again but he shook it off to being over tired.
Then Tommy asked, “Dad wasn’t my light on when we left?” “I don’t know Tommy,” John
answered calmly, “Was it?” “I thought so,” he said, “Dad I’m tired.” “Yeah me
too,” Simmons responded, “Let’s get a good night’s sleep and see if everything
looks brighter in the morning.”
Before going into
the house Simmons reached under the front seat of the Explorer and removed the
.38 revolver that he’d put there when they left L.A. John tucked the pistol securely in his
waistband after getting out of the truck.. The sheriff’s warning had touched a
nerve in him.
